Biography

With his warm timbre and versatile stage presence, Swedish bass-baritone Eric Ander has already performed on some of Europe’s top opera and concert stages. In 2021 he made his debut at Oper Frankfurt in the world premiere of Lucia Ronchetti’s Inferno. 2019 included his debut as Reinmar von Zweter in Tannhäuser at the Dutch National Opera and following this, a return to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in Andrea Breth’s production of Jakob Lenz. With this production (available on DVD) he already performed in 2015 at Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie and 2017 at Staatsoper Berlin. From 2014-2016 Eric Ander was a young artist at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, gaining important experience in several roles and covers. Collaborations with directors like Christof Loy, Christoph Marthaler, Kirill Serebrennikov and Jossi Wieler have formed him as an artist and have influenced his view on opera as an art form.

Performances in the 2023/2024 season include the role of the Sprecher in a concert performance and cd recording of Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Opera-Théâtre de Clermont-Ferrand, Bach's St. John Passion in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart, as well as one of the solo parts in the world premiere of James Wood's Apokalypsis with Collegium Vocale Gent at the Gent Festival and at the Muziekgebouw aan t’IJ in Amsterdam.

In July 2024 Eric Ander makes his debut at the Nationaltheater Mannheim as Masetto in Don Giovanni.

Eric Ander is equally at home in baroque, romantic and avant-garde repertoire and has performed in most various projects. Last season he sang the role of Masetto in a new production of Don Giovanni at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. In autumn 2016 he embodied the title role of children’s opera Käpt’n Bone (after Rossinis L’italiana in Algeri) at Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and as a ”Residenzgast” at Theater Chemnitz from 2016-2018 he sang in new productions of Pique Dame, Le nozze di Figaro and Un ballo in maschera. More recently, he has performed in a production of Artaserse by Hasse at the re-opening of Das Markgräfliche Opernhaus in Bayreuth, in the Cuvilliés Theatre in Munich and at Müpa Budapest.

While studying at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding Eric Ander convinced as Snaut in Michael Obst’s Solaris, in the title role in Handel’s Imeneo and as Hérode in Salomé by Antoine Mariotte, garnering him an Opernwelt nomination for Talent of the Year.

Highlights as a concert soloist have included Handel’s Messiah a the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Bach’s Kreuzstab Cantata with Philippe Herreweghe at the Concertgebouw Brugge, Braunfels’ Passionskantate in the Liederhalle Stuttgart and Haydn’s Creation and J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion with Stockholms Kammarkör. Eric Ander also sang Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle at the Académie du Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and a concert performance of Rameau’s Naïs under the baton of Christophe Rousset at the Aldeburgh Festival.

Eric Ander has performed together with the orchestras of Staatskapelle Berlin, Ensemble Modern, Nederlands Filharmonisch Orkest, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Staatsorchester Stuttgart, Hofkapelle München and L’arpa festante in collaborations with conductors including Marc Albrecht, Sylvain Cambrelling, Giuliano Carella, Georg Fritzsch, Michael Hofstetter, Ingo Metzmacher, Franck Ollu and Ulf Schirmer. 

Born 1990 in Stockholm, Eric Ander began his musical education as a string player and choral singer. He began studying voice with Eva Larsson-Myrsten and Prof. Petteri Salomaa at the Kungliga Musikhögskolan in Stockholm and continued with KS Prof. Andreas Schmidt at the Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding, Munich. Furthermore, he participated in masterclasses with Sergei Leiferkus, Jane Thorner, Dorothee Mields and Dietrich Henschel, among others. Most recently, Eric Ander cultivated his talent for the German Lied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München under the guidance of Prof. Lars Woldt, Prof. Rudi Spring and Prof. Fritz Schwinghammer.
